141mpg hybrid Volkswagen Passat GTE debuts

This the Volkswagen Passat GTE, the plug-in hybrid version of VW’s eighth-generation Mondeo rival.

Powered by a 1.4-litre TSi petrol engine coupled to an electric motor, the GTE produces a total of 216bhp yet returns a claimed 141mpg and emits as little as 45g/km of Co2.

The lithium-ion battery provides a range of 31 miles; combined range is 620 miles. From a domestic mains socket, a full recharge takes around 4 hours 15 minutes. Volkswagen will sell you a wall-mounted fast charger that does the job in two-and-a-half hours.

The disc-shaped synchronous electric motor is mounted within the Passat’s six-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox. Drive goes to the front wheels. 0-62mph is quoted at less than 8.0 seconds, with a top speed of 136mph. On electricity only, it tops out at 80mph.

The Passat GTE is marked out from its conventionally-fuelled siblings by myriad trim details. Inside, the various display screens can show the driver a wealth of information about which mode the car is running in, how efficiently they’re driving and where the nearest charging point is.

It comes well equipped too, with LED headlights and many safety systems coming as standard. The Volkswagen Passat GTE will go on sale in the second half of 2015, in both saloon and estate forms.

In other Passat-related news, VW has announced prices for the new range, which goes on sale in the UK month, with deliveries due to start in January.

The all-diesel engine range starts with a 118bhp 1.6-litre; a single-turbo 2.0-litre is available with 148bhp or 187bhp. A 237bhp twin-turbo 2.0-litre tops the range. The latter comes with a DSG ‘box as standard; the dual-clutcher is an option on the other power units.

Trim levels start at S and runs up to R-Line. The range starts at £22,215 for the 1.6 TDi S saloon. The equivalent estate costs an extra £1,530 across the board.
