This mean machine is Mercedes-AMG’s contender for the 2016 DTM series, based on the new C63 Coupe.
Called, predictably enough, the Mercedes-AMG C63 DTM, the new racer is essentially the same as the existing car under the (carbonfibre) skin, but that skin is all new. It’s actually remarkably similar to the road car, though the front end is more steeply sloped – taking advantage of the engine sitting much further back in the chassis – and there’s that bonkers aero package.
As per the regulations, the C63 DTM uses a 4.0-litre V8 engine producing around 480bhp. The car is actually a bit of a stop-gap, as new ‘Class 1’ rules come into force in a couple of years, which will unify the Northern Europe-based DTM with the Japanese SuperGT series and a new category in the USA. Details are still being firmed up, but Class 1 cars will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbo motor making 600bhp.
The DTM car was revealed alongside the C63 Coupe Edition 1, which marks the model’s launch. The car you see here is the C63 S Edition 1, sporting Designo Magno Selenite Grey matt paint with yellow detailing, a colour scheme only available on the C63 S. The spec list includes ceramic brakes, AMG Performance seats, AMG Aerodynamics Package in gloss black and the Night Package of chrome and gloss black detailing.
The lesser C63 Edition 1 does without the ceramic brakes and comes in a wider choice of colours with matt grey detailing.
Both the C63 DTM and C63 Edition 1 will be on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this month.
