Brilliant though it is, there’s no denying the evergreen Volkswagen Golf GTi has been left behind in the power stakes recently. So what better to celebrate the iconic hot hatch’s 40th birthday than by turning the wick up?
That’s exactly what VW has done for the Volkswagen Golf GTi Clubsport edition. Not just a bit, either. Power from the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo engine jumps from 217bhp to 261bhp. It goes further, as well. Switch on the overboost and it delivers a ten-second burst of 286bhp. Which puts it in touch with the SEAT Leon Supra and Vauxhall Astra VXR.
The increase has a profound effect on performance. With the DSG gearbox fitted, the 0-62mph drops 0.6 seconds to 5.9 (6.0 with the manual). Top speed is 155mph, and it’ll return 40mpg-ish with either ‘box.
It’s not just the engine that’s been fettled. The bodywork has been massaged for better aero, producing, VW claims, “significantly improved downforce.” The package includes a new front bumper, side sills, rear diffuser and multi-element rear spoiler. The effect is “ground breaking handling properties at high speeds and breath taking cornering speeds.”
Along with the aerodynamic addenda, the body is adorned with much gloss black detailing – the white with black roof colour combo seen here will almost certainly be the most popular. The interior is dressed up with part-alcantara sports seats, red stitching and more gloss black trim.
No word on prices or UK availability yet. In the meantime, the Golf Clubsport will be on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week.
