What’s a Mini Clubman ALL4 then?
Mini’s Ford Focus-size estate, now available with ALL4 all-wheel-drive.
What do I need to know?
Under normal conditions, the Clubman ALL4 is actually front-wheel-drive. But the system’s electronic brains constant monitor the situation and send power to the rear wheels as needed.
The system works with the Clubman’s Driving Dynamics System and the optional driving mode selector to determine how much power should be sent to which axle, too. And an electronic diff lock provides a torque vectoring function.
The Clubman ALL4 comes with a choice of petrol or diesel engine, both 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo units. The petrol-engined Cooper S serves up 189bhp and 206lb/ft of torque (221lb/ft on overboost). The optional eight-speed automatic gearbox is 0.1secs quicker from 0-62mph than the standard manual, posting a time of 6.9secs. Either way, top speed is 142mph.
Again the auto is the more economical of the two, returning a combined average of 44.8mpg of CO2 emissions of 146g/km, against 40.9mpg and 159g/km. Though, of course, if you’re most interested in economy you’ll want the 187bhp, 295lb/ft, auto-only Cooper SD diesel, which achieves figures of 58.9mpg and 126g/km, with performance of 7.2secs to 62mph and 138mph flat-out.
Despite a modest increase in weight, the extra traction means the ALL4 models are actually fractionally quicker off the line than their front-wheel-drive siblings. Fuel economy has suffered, but only marginally.
Otherwise, the ALL4 Clubman is much the same as the standard car. Standard equipment is reasonably generous, with satnav and ‘extended’ interior lighting as standard. And, this being a Mini, the options list can turn the Clubman into a tiny 7-Series. Just be careful you don’t go overboard with the personalisation end of the list.
When can I buy one?
The Mini Clubman ALL4 goes on sale in April, after debuting at the upcoming New York Auto Show.
