2015 marks the demise of the iconic Land Rover Defender in its current form. As such, we will see a plethora of Defender-based specials that have been built to mark the occasion.
Just this week, we’ve seen the bonkers Flying Huntsman from Kahn Design and Land Rover’s own commemorative special editions. Specialist Defender modifiers Urban Truck have come up with their own tribute, the Defender Ultimate RS.
Painted deep gloss black, it looks like Darth Vader’s weekend wheels. And the interior is swathed in nappa leather and stuffed with Alpine stereo kit. But that’s only the half of it.
The heart of the beast in the 6.2-litre Chevrolet V8 engine under the bonnet, producing around 500bhp. A six-speed automatic gearbox takes the strain and the twin big-bore exhausts no doubt sound like Tom Jones bellowing through a megaphone.
A two-inch lowering kit, Bilstein dampers and Urban Truck’s own anti-roll bars give some semblance of handling, though we’re not sure we’d want to swing it down a country lane. Fortunately, the brakes are suitably meaty, with six-pot calipers.
Incidentally, the aftermarket Alpine infotainment unit features Apple CarPlay, which syncs with iOS phones. Which, weirdly, puts Urban Trucks, a small company from Milton Keynes, ahead of most major car manufacturers.
There is, of course, the small matter of price. Actually, it’s quite a big matter. It’s £77,500. Plus VAT. Which is a lot for a gussied-up farm vehicle, bits of which are nearly 70 years old. But it is half the price of the Huntsman.
Whatever. We think all these madcap Landies are rather wonderful.
