Aston Martin Vanquish and Rapide S updated

Aston Martin has updated the Vanquish and Rapide S for the 2015 model year. Central to the changes is a new eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The new transmission has been developed between Aston Martin and ZF, replacing the existing, rather ancient, six-speed unit. The effect on performance and economy is dramatic.

The 0-60mph times on both the Vanquish and Rapide S have dropped by half a second to 3.6secs and 4.2secs, respectively. Incidentally, the Vanquish is now the fastest accelerating production Aston, ever.

Both are now more frugal, with Co2 emissions of 298g/km for the Vanquish, and 300g/km for the Rapide S, while both return 31mpg on the extra urban cycle.

The revised ratios and two extra gears that make those improvements possible also mean that the two cars can now breach the magic 200mph barrier.

A slight increase in the 6.0-litre V12 engine’s power helps, the Vanquish making an extra 3bhp, for a total of 568bhp, and the Rapide S another two, taking the total to 552bhp. Torque increases to 465lb/ft in both.

There’s few tweaks underneath the cars as well, both getting revised traction control and steering software. The Vanquish receives stiffer dampers, while the Rapide S gets bigger brakes.

To round off the changes, there’s a new wheel design, new colours and new interior trim options.

The new Aston Martin Vanquish and Rapide S will go on sale later this year. Prices will be announced in due course.
