At least one of you reading this will have been stuck behind a camper van at some point over the Bank Holiday weekend. And I bet the last thing that crossed your mind, as it dawdled along at 40mph, was that campers can be really cool.
Well, they can and here’s the proof. It’s the Fiat Ducato 4×4 Expedition, on display right now at the Dusseldorf Caravan Salon. Which sounds like a barrel of laughs.
Anyway, the Ducato is actually the most popular camper van in Europe, possibly the world. In the last ten years alone, over half a million of one sort or another have rolled out onto the world’s highways and byways. But there has never been a Ducato camper like this.
First off, it has a bespoke four-wheel-drive system devised by specialists Dangel, with raised suspension and tough skid plates for when the going gets rough. But however unforgiving the terrain outside, the happy campers inside will be living it up in the lap of luxury.
The interior is the work of Tecnoform, maker of interiors for high-end motorhomes and yachts. There are plush materials, integrated lighting, a state-of-the-art entertainment system and not a single floral pattern in sight. Fiat hasn’t actually said how many beds there are in the Expedition; most campers with the same long-wheelbase, high-roof, extended overhang body sleep at least four.
A front winch, full-length roof rack and LED daytime running lights complete the ‘van.
You can’t actually buy the Ducato 4×4 Expedition; it’s a one-off for the show. Even if you could, it probably wouldn’t leave any change from 100 grand, which is a lot for a Fiat van with some beds in it. But it’s not very much for a high-end studio flat that can go anywhere.
