DO YOU remember that dreadful ‘harlequin’ VW Polo?
A patchwork of colours that some designer, who had clearly had 43 espressos too many, thought looked clever.
No it didn’t. Well some equally arty folk have decided to recreate that look – and even messier – with the current BMW i8 and i3.
Apparently it’s supposed to be based on 1980s colours and designs from Memphis Group, a Milan design house that did household designs, surprisingly.
For a decade from 1981 to 1991 the Italian firm were in the heyday of delivering art deco derived for 1950s Americana.
Now they’ve re-emerged to give this paintjob to the electric Beemers and have ruined them.
Memphis Group meets BMW and you end up with a Thompson Twins single cover.
The interior looks like someone has had a fight in Peter Stringfellow’s pants draw.
Let’s just stick to gun metal grey, white and black please.
