Borgward BX7 SUV revealed

These are the first images of the Borgward BX7 SUV, which spearheads the long-defunct German marque’s revival.

Borgward’s relaunch was confirmed at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, 52 years after the original company folded. Founder Carl F. Borgward’s grandson Christian is at the helm, while Chinese truck maker Foton is providing financial backing. The BX7 debuts at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week.

The BX7 is completely new. At 4.7 metres long it’s about the same size as the Jeep Cherokee, Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe it’s pitched against. The original Borgwards were recognised as quality products, and the new company wants to maintain that tradition.

Only the Santa Fe matches the Borgward in offering seven seats, though some other American and Chinese cars this size do. Seats-down boot capacity of 1,344 litres suggests the rearmost pews might be short on space, though.

The styling is a bit generic. The front bears a resemblance to the Buick Enclave, while the rear has distinct overtones of Porsche Cayenne. That, we suspect, is no coincidence. Both those cars are hugely popular in China, expected to be Borgward’s biggest market.

Power comes from a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbo petrol engine producing 221bhp. That’s sent through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox to a BorgWarner four-wheel-drive system.

A hybrid version will also be available with a total output of 396bhp, the engine powering the front wheels and the electric motor the rears. A pure-electric range of around 34 miles is promised.

A conspicuously large 12.3-inch touchscreen dominates the interior. Equipment is generous, with all manner of safety and driver assist systems available, as are smartphone connectivity and a wifi hotspot.

Sales start in China next year, with the European launch set for 2017. Prices in Germany are expected to start at around €26,000 (£19,000). There’s no word yet if Borgward intends to export the BX7 to right-hand-drive markets like the UK.
