The Bugatti Veyron is a stupendously expensive car. Even early ‘basic’ versions cost £1 million and the endless special editions probably sell for several times that.

At the time of writing, the cheapest one on Auto Trader was still £675,000. And then there’s the running costs – a set of tyres costs about £25,000.

So why, then, is this one on eBay in America for just $115,000. Simple: it isn’t actually a Veyron. It’s a replica.

In fairness, even in its unfinished state, it’s a pretty convincing replica. It’s based on a 2004 Pontiac GTO chassis, V8 engine and running gear, with a fibreglass body supported by a tubular steel frame.

In the pictures the proportions appear spot-on, which is an achievement when the donor car is front-engined and the real Veyron isn’t.

For that $115,000 asking price, the not-a-Veyron will come fully finished with the buyer’s choice of colour and trim.

$115k is still a big chunk of money. But you will probably get 80% of the Veyron experience for a fraction of the price of the real thing. So if you concentrated really hard, you could just about call it good value.
