The chances of running from the law in Italy have lowered significantly now that the Carabineri have a couple of Alfa Romeo Giulia QVs to play with.
To recap, the Giulia Quadrifoglio Verde takes aim squarely at the BMW M3 and Mercedes-AMG C63 and comes equipped for the fight. Its 3.0-litre, twin-turbo V6 engine serves up 503bhp which translates to a 0-62mph time of 3.9secs and a top speed rumoured to be around 190mph.
There’s advanced aero, too, and lots of lightweight materials, keeping overall mass down to 1530kg – less than both the Beemer and Merc.
With so much power and speed on tap, only specially-trained drivers will be allowed to take the wheel of the Giulia QV. Two will enter service in Rome and Milan to begin with, mostly filling rapid response and essential emergency service roles.
Beside the livery – which we reckon is the coolest police livery in the world – the cars are equipped with LED light bars, comms equipment, tablet computer and build-it equipment holders.
Meanwhile, the most powerful marked car the British police can muster is the 260bhp BMW 330d. A few forces use unmarked Audi S3s and Subaru WRXs, but that’s as extreme as it gets. Which a pretty pathetic state of affairs.
