Caterham Superlight 20 edition launched

It’s 20 years since Caterham practically invented the track day special when it launched the Seven Superlight. There had been hardcore, track-biased car before, but the Superlight was the first that was (almost) as usable on the road as it was thrilling on track.

Caterham is marking the anniversary with a 20-off special edition; the Caterham Superlight 20. It’s based on the current Seven 270, but pared back to evoke the original Superlight ethos.

The bodywork is finished in bare aluminium, as per the original, saving 6kg of weight. The wings, nose cone, aeroscreens and interior panels are rendered in carbonfibre, as are the seats which are shared with the top-of-the-range 620R.

Unique gauges, gear knob, key and a number dash plaque dress up the interior, while the chassis is finished in titanium grey. Only paint, weather equipment and a heater are on the options list.

Power comes from a 1.6-litre Ford engine, producing 135bhp. It drives the rear wheels via a six-speed, close-ratio gearbox and a limited-slip differential. Drifts will be a mere flex of the ankle away. Sport suspension keeps it tied to the road.

It’s not the fastest Caterham in the world, with a 0-60mph time of 4.9 seconds and top speed of 122mph. Manageable, then, rather than rip-snorting. Whatever, it’ll be a hoot and a half to drive like every other Caterham.

Order books for the 20 being built open today, though if reading this has moved you to slap down the £29,995 asking price, you’ve probably missed the boat already.
