DO YOU remember when the Honda Civic was only driven at 28mph by grannies?
I’ve wasted about seven years of my life trundling behind Civic Sunday drivers.
Now British Touring car Champion Gordon Shedden has won the last two titles hooning round rather quickly in his Halfords Yuasa Racing Civic Type R.
Now, as you can see in this vid, the Type R (R is for red-hot, rapid or raunchy, whatever you prefer) has ripped round the Nurburgring in a record-breaking seven minutes, 43.8 second lap time – that’s a whopping three seconds quicker than the old champ VW Golf GTI Clubsport S.
Now James May and I have this in common.
Nope not the dreadful fashion shirts and grey hair.
Just the dislike of the motoring world’s obsession with the Green Hell race circuit.
The Civic Type R might be record-breaking but I bet it’s back-breaking at the same time in a stripped-out interior with racing seats made of concrete that make your spine disintegrate as you drive over a tiny piece of gravel.
Nonetheless, I’m old. The yoof of today who put pictures of hot hatches on their walls will love this.
The highly-specced versions of the Golf, Seat Leon and Renault Megane have all claimed this Nurburgring battle in recent years.
Now it’s the Civic’s turn to be the quickest, hottest hatch in world right now.
Just remember that next time you are stuck behind one at 28mph.
