Lego produces some very cool vehicle kits these days – not least this Technic 911 GT3 RS – and now this VW Beetle has been added to the Creator series.

And it looks good, certainly about as accurate as you can model with almost no straight lines largely using square bricks. It’s got loads of nice details like the headlamps and trim strip on the bonnet, a fully-modelled engine and a fuel tank. Plus there’s roof rack with surfboard and coolbox, even a choice of number plates and a little blanket to go on the parcel shelf.

It’s a substantial thing, 29cm long and made from 1167 pieces – no wonder the box has an ‘expert’ label – so it won’t be the work of half an hour. Or even an afternoon. Maybe a week, if you’re organised and focused.

Incidentally, this isn’t the first Lego VW Beetle, but the previous interpretation was decidedly approximate. In comparison to that, you’d could mistake this for the real thing.

It goes on sale on 1 August, priced at £69.99, which seems pretty reasonable to us.
