Did you ask Ford for a new GT? Did you wait excitedly for the confirmation, only to be told that you wouldn’t be getting one due to demand? Yeah, us too (we wish). Seriously though, if you did, all is not lost. Ford is going to build it for two more years! This takes the production run to four years in total. Nice work, Ford!
The carbon fibre, 600bhp, V6 honey is having its build run extended for a number of reasons. Firstly, it should appease the overwhelming demand for the car. Of the cars being built, 500 were requested for the UK alone! It’s one popular sucker with an instant worldwide following. Oh, and of course, 24 months of extra production means the car can compete more, too.
The aim is to make sure Ford Performance can enter the car into both the IMSA and World Endurance Championship (WEC) for four years in total. Given what the car has done already at Le Mans and other events, it makes sense to push on. You don’t walk away from winning the LM GTE Pro category, or coming third overall. No, you build on that!
And build on it Ford will. And we (well, those of us with more than £4.65 in the bank) can be part of it via the road car. Though there are some caveats in place, just to make sure everything is fair.
Potential customers who already applied to purchase Ford GT will only need to update their request when the next application window reopens in early 2018. Ford hasn’t forgotten you, so long as you don’t forget them!
“While we can’t build enough Ford GTs for everyone who has applied, we are going to produce additional vehicles in an effort to satisfy more of our most loyal Ford ambassadors,” says Dave Pericak, global director, Ford Performance. Aww, how nice.
The third (or first additional) year of production will be for those who were placed on the waiting list. If you missed the initial order window altogether, don’t worry, you will be served by production year four. Provided you get in there quick!
This is a massive and deeply impressive undertaking by Ford. It shows why it’s one of the best at what it does. The customer is key and the demand isn’t being ignored. Ford knows we want it, both on the road and the track, and it’s following that. Nice work, Ford. Just don’t forget to send ours. You got our application, right? We sent one, we promise!
