IS this the stupidest invention ever?

A Ford Mustang given a QUIET mode.

What on earth is the point of owning a Mustang in the first place.

It’s all come about because a Ford worker’s neighbour complained when he was reversing his car out of the driveway.

So the Mustang has been muted because of some annoying killjoy.

Anyway, this is a true story.

The Mustang in 2018 will now come with ‘Quiet Mode’ which allows you to reduce the noise of the car’s exhaust.

There are not many cars that produce the same ear-bleeding burble as the Mustang and that’s great if you’re on a race track or want to show off but not so great in a suburban neighbourhood.

Ford’s former head of vehicle engineering found this out the hard way when one of his neighbours called the police on him.

Steve von Forester was backing a Shelby GT350 Mustang out of his driveway before the car’s thunderous V8 kicked in.

The disturbance provoked a neighbour to call the police – which turns out was the inspiration behind the new feature.

He said: “I love the sound of the V8, but it can be loud, and you can’t annoy people like that in your neighbourhood.

“It sounds so cool, but I thought, there has to be a way to give people more control over the engine’s sound.”

Von Forester and the fellow Ford program team members then created the industry first Quiet-Mode which is otherwise known as “Good Neighbour Mode” among the engineers.

Drivers can switch the exhaust to Quiet Mode when they turn on the engine or bookmark periods where, when the car is turned on, Quiet Mode is automatically activated.

For example, between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m., drivers can keep the peace by scheduling their car to start, minus the roar.

When out of the area, the exhaust can then be changed back to Normal, Sport or Track mode.

Matt Flis, Ford exhaust development engineer, added: “Active valve performance exhaust gives Mustang owners the best of both worlds – that classic Mustang sound, and the ability to not wake up your neighbours when you leave the house early in the morning or arrive home late at night.”

Forget the Mustang ‘Quiet Mode’ Ford.

Just devise one for my ex-wife instead…
