Ford Mustang to get world’s first knee airbag

2015 Ford Mustang Active Glovebox Knee Airbag

Ford may already make some of the best class leading cars across a number of different car classes but that still doesn’t stop them improving their technology and safety features on each car.

A new feature to come out of the Ford Innovation Centre is a knee airbag design on the new Ford Mustang. This feature makes the all-new Mustang the first vehicle to be equipped with this type of knee airbag that is integrated within the lid of the glove box.

The all-new Ford Mustang already has eight airbags as standard and has been awarded with the highest possible safety standard by North American authorities.

As the iconic car will be making it’s way to the UK in right-hand drive for the first time in it’s 50+ years of production, it’s clear Ford want the Mustang to be up to the absolute highest standards in safety.

This safety feature weighs 65% less than the conventional knee airbags but it still offers very similar protection for the passengers. The reduction in weight improves fuel efficiency and the knee airbag innovation has actually been granted 23 patents already.

The weight saving comes through the use of an innovative moulded plastic instead of a regular textile fabric airbag. This plastic moulding is placed in between the outer and inner glove box lid surfaces.

In the event of a collision, the knee airbag is inflated by a tiny gas generator inside the glove box lid in just 20 milliseconds. This then pushes the lid exterior outwards to provide legs with protection.

Ford restraints manager Sean West said: “This is a new way of thinking about airbags. With this design we were able to combine the functions of two separate parts into one single part to save on space, weight and components; and move the instrument panel further forward, ensuring there was more room for the front passenger.”

Ford are continuing testing on future uses of this weight and space-saving airbag technology and while it’s not confirmed whether this technology will make it onto other models, it’s almost a given that this tech or a very similar one will be found on a number of Fords in the near future.

The all-new Ford Mustang is on sale in the UK in both fastback and convertible variants. The iconic car comes in right-hand drive for the first time ever.

Available engines are either a 5.0L V8 or a 2.3L EcoBoost and prices start from £29,995.
