Gawp at the drop-dead gorgeous Zagato Mostro

In its 96-year history, Italian coachbuilder Zagato has been responsible for some of the most beautiful cars the world has ever seen. And some of the ugliest (see: Nissan Stelvio).

Anyway, in recent years it has busied itself producing one-offs and limited runs for super-rich collectors. This is the latest, the Zagato Mostro, which breaks cover at the ludicrously glamorous Villa d’Este Concours d’Eleganza this weekend.

The Mostro pays tribute to a Zagato-bodied Maserati 450S racing car of the late Fifties, a raging beast of a machine that was nicknamed ‘Mostro’, Italian for ‘monster’. That car was subsequently converted to road spec (clearly by someone with a mild death wish), and so the new Mostro is a track-biased road car.

Zagato has used a carbonfibre chassis for the Mostro, dubbed Monocell. McLaren uses the same moniker for its all-carbon monocoque, but it’s unclear if there’s any connection. That seems unlikely, as all McLarens have the engine behind the cabin and the Mostro is definitely front-engined. Albeit, with the motor well behind the front axle.

Speaking of which, power comes from a Maserati-sourced V8, producing at least 460bhp. And a suitably filthy noise, no doubt. No word on performance, but it ain’t going to be slow. Drive goes to the rear wheels via a six-speed semi-auto gearbox. Suspension is by double wishbones front and back, with race car-style pushrod spring and damper units.

As a piece of design, the Mostro may very well be just about perfect. Zagato hasn’t revealed how much perfection costs, but the price will be well into seven figures. Not that you can actually buy one. Just five will be built and all are spoken for.

Let’s just hope they don’t all end up locked away in a vault somewhere. A car this beautiful needs to be seen by as many people as possible.
