A possible hardcore version of the Ford GT has been teased in the image you see here, its maker promising to deliver more details on it at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
As you can see, the new GT has a roof-mounted air intake and a whopping-great rear spoiler, neither of which appear on the ‘standard’ version. That would suggest this is a track-focused version of the already-uncompromising GT.
In its current form, the GT is powered by a 3.5-litre, twin-turbo V6 engine serving up 647bhp. That’s enough for a 0-62mph time of 2.8secs and a top speed of 216mph.
There has been so much demand for the GT that Ford has already extended the planned production run of 1,000 units to 1,350 – and could probably have sold all of them 20 times over. It isn’t clear if this new variant will be built within that run, or if production will be extended again to cover it.
Potential owners have to go through a rigorous application and screening process that prioritises real enthusiasts who drive their cars. Owners aren’t allowed to sell their GT for two years after purchase to weed out speculators. There may well be a glut of GTs coming onto the market within the next year as those agreements start to expire. It’ll be interesting to see auction prices, as that’s the truest reflection of how the market values them. Though there will be always be the odd dealer chancing their arm asking massively inflated prices.
Ford will have a big presence at the FoS. Besides the GT announcement, the new Focus ST and Shelby Mustang GT500 will make their UK debut. Various Ford race cars will be in action, as well. The current Fiesta WRC+ will tear up the rally stage, while the 2018 championship-winning Fusion NASCAR, the wild 1980 Zakspeed Capri Turbo and the #66 GT that raced at Le Mans this year will be in action on the hillclimb.
Ken Block will also be creating a spectacle with his Hoonitruck and Escort Cosworth, as will Vaugh Gittin Jr with the Mustang RTR.
