Hyundai announced last week that it will launch a new luxury brand, Genesis, later this year. These renderings are a first look at the first car to wear the badge, the Genesis G90.
It’s an S-Class-size luxury saloon, effectively replacing the current Hyundai Equus. The initial launch will be in its native South Korea, badged EQ900. Sales will follow in China and the United States. A UK launch hasn’t been confirmed yet; as Infiniti has proved, launching a new luxury brand here is very difficult.
The G90 is the first of six Genesis models that will be launched before the end of this decade. The range is likely to include smaller saloons, at least one SUV and a coupe.
According to Hyundai, the G90 shows off the Genesis brand’s ‘Athletic Elegance’ styling language, while the interior features “human-centred” technology, along with “world-best safety features and technological innovations.”
What powertrains will be available is not currently known; the existing Equus has a choice of 3.8-litre V6 and 5.0-litre V8 petrol units. A hybrid option would be sensible, especially for the US market. Hyundai promises an “engaging” driving experience.
