Jeep have announced a new diesel engine that will be joining the Jeep Cherokee range.
The new 2.2L MultiJet engine has an improved range with better fuel economy, improved power and torque and overall performance. There are two power outputs available on the new engine with 185 hp and 200 hp versions replacing the outgoing 170 hp automatic engine. Both engine outputs have 324 lb-ft of torque and use the Jeep nine-speed automatic which is a first in its class.
The 185hp engine is fitted on Jeep Cherokee Longitude and Longitude+ variants only and the 200 hp version is available on Limited model variant.
Both engine outputs have different figures in both performance and economy.
With Jeep Active Drive I the 200 hp variant tops out at 127 mph. 0-62mph is completed in 8.5 seconds and the combined fuel consumption at 49.6 mpg.
The same 200 hp variant with Jeep Active Drive II and low-range has a top speed of 126 mph, does 0-62 mph in 8.7s and has a combined fuel consumption of 46.3 mpg.
As for the 185 hp variant, that comes with Jeep Active Drive I and completes 0-62mph in 8.8s before topping out at 125 mph. The combined fuel consumption is 49.5 mpg.
Jeep Active Drive offers Jeep’s original rear-axle disconnect system. Active Drive I improves fuel economy, while Active Drive II adds a two-speed power transfer unit, for low range capability and hill-descent control. Both versions carry a towing capacity of 2.5 tonnes.
On top of the new engine, Jeep have added some new equipment to the already generous standard equipment that comes across the Jeep Cherokee range.
Standard equipment from entry level now includes the electric tailgate, windscreen wipers with rain sensor, dusk sensor, eight-position electrically adjustable seat and automatic anti-dazzle rear-view mirror with a built-in microphone.
This improved entry level specification gives the Jeep Cherokee more all around value for money on the lower models in comparison to its class rivals which, in our review of the Cherokee, is something it needs to capitalise on in the very competitive mid-size SUV class.
The Jeep Cherokee range starts at £26,095 OTR.
