Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann is set to leave the Italian supercar maker and join Audi Quattro GmbH, according to Italian media reports.
The highly-respected Winkelmann has headed Lamborghini for the past decade, through a period of huge growth for the company. Former Ferrari F1 boss Stefano Domenicali is the favourite to replace Winkelmann.
On leaving Ferrari in 2014, Domenicali joined Audi, sparking rumours that the German manufacturer was planning a Formula 1 campaign. Those were quashed, but his move to Lamborghini could suggest there are plans to step up its motorsport programme – it’s first official campaign was a tilt at the Blancpain Endurance Series in 2015.
Audi Quattro GmbH is responsible for RS models and the R8. It’s ticking along well at the moment, but Winkelmann’s appointment might suggest there are expansion plans afoot.
We will see.
