The McLaren hypercar you can’t drive

McLAREN have revealed their new hypercar – but you can’t drive it. Well, not on the road anyway.

The Ultimate Vision will only be available to race in the upcoming Gran Turismo Sport video game.

Th 1,000bhp racer is part of the PS4 game’s futuristic garage that’ll be released on October 18.

The McLaren is inspired by F1 with “active” aerodynamics straight from Fernando Alonso’s motor.

Fortunately it won’t have the same unreliable and under-powered Honda engine but a 1,150bhp hybrid.

The 4.0-litre V8 twin-turbo sends power direct to the rear wheels with powerful electric motors fitted to the front wheel “pods”.

It’s much like Aston Martin’s Valkyrie and the Mercedes Project One – except McLaren won’t actually sell it.

There’s a central driving position similar to that seen on the iconic McLaren F1 from the mid-90s.

But the driver actually lies on their front with the cockpit wrapped around them.

Fortunately for gamers, you can stay sitting in your sofa unless you want to add some extra realism and stretch out in your lounge.

The concept – which previews 2030 and beyond – is a natural successor to the more recent McLaren P1.

Rob Melville, McLaren’s design director, said: “We wanted to break new ground and to innovate and the McLaren Ultimate Vision Gran Turismo does exactly that.

“It puts the driver absolutely at the center of the action, delivering a sensory overload with incredible sound and awe-inspiring acceleration.

“From the game player’s point of view, the driving experience in this car will be like nothing else: the amazing glass cockpit and the motorcycle-like driving position – with your head far forward, almost right above the front axle – combine to allow you to see exactly where the apex of the corner is so you can shave vital milliseconds off each lap.”

Gran Turismo Sport – the seventh instalment in the racing sim franchise – launches on PS4 on October 18.
