BMW Italy has created this roughty-toughty Mini Clubman Scrambler concept as a 50th birthday present to itself.

It’s inspired by the deeply cool, retro-styled R NINET Scrambler motorbike pictured alongside it here. The most obvious change is those knobbly off-road tyres on black wheels. The suspension has been lifted and wheelarch extensions added to accommodate them.

Extra body cladding, spotlights, a roof rack and Frozen Grey matt paint – also seen on the limited edition M3 30 Jahre – finish off the exterior, while the interior has been retrimmed in plush tan leather and alcantara.

It’s based on a Clubman Cooper S, so power comes from a 189bhp, 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo motor, connected to ALL4 four-wheel-drive, with which the Clubman recently became available.

After it’s been shown and Salone dell’Auto Parco Valentino in Turin this week, the Clubman Scrambler will probably disappear into the corner of a warehouse. Which seems like a shame, really.
