Meet the 666bhp, £285,000 McLaren 675LT Spider

This, says McLaren, is “the most focused, fastest and exhilarating open top model ever to wear a McLaren badge.” We’re not going to argue with them on that one.

As the name suggests, the McLaren 675LT Spider is pretty much identical to the 675LT Coupe that was launched earlier this year. Apart from the three-piece folding hardtop, which works at speed up to 19mph, obviously.

Power comes from heavily revised version of the 3.8-litre, twin-turbo V8 found in the 650S. According to McLaren, 50% of the components are new. The motor produces the same 666bhp and 516lb/ft of torque that it does in the coupe.

With just 1,270kg to haul around (100kg less than the 650S Spider and just 40kg more than the 675LT Coupe), the 0-62mph sprint is dispatched in 2.9secs. 124mph passes in just 8.1secs. Top speed? 203mph.

The light weight is down to extensive use of carbonfibre for the body panels. It helps, too, that the carbon chassis tub is so strong it doesn’t need any extra reinforcement to compensate for the lack of a roof.

Suspension is the same as the coupe, too. The front sits on lighter, stiffer springs and the track is stretched 20mm. 19in front and 20in rear forged alloy wheels come as standard, wearing specially developed Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres.

‘LT’ of course means ‘long tail’, referring to the legendary F1 GTR racer. The 675LT is actually only fractionally longer than the 650S, but it features a much bigger active rear spoiler, with contributes to a 40% increase in downforce.

Inside are a pair of carbon-shelled seats modelled on those in the P1, trimmed in leather. There’s no aircon as standard, saving 16kg, but it can be added as a no-cost option. The all the minor controls, including heating and stereo controls, are grouped into the portrait-mounted infotainment touchscreen.

500 examples of the 675LT Spider will be built, selling at the not inconsiderable price of £285,450. That looks steep when you consider that the new Ferrari 488 Spider offers similar performance for around 200 grand. But the similarly pricey 675LT Coupe sold almost instantly and you can be almost guaranteed this will, too.

Deliveries start in summer 2016.
