Meet the Ford Transit rally van

Alright, that headline is a little misleading. But this bodykitted, limited edition Ford Transit Custom is endorsed by M-Sport, the outfit behind Ford’s efforts in the World Rally Championship for the last 20 years. So it is a rally van by association. A bit.

Anyway, what exactly have we got here? It’s the work of Welsh-based modifiers Van Sport, who have developed a bodykit for the Transit Custom inspired by the Ford Fiesta RS WRC that competes in world rallying.

Deep bumper extensions, side skirts and a rear spoiler add something approaching a sporty note to the styling – these things are all relative when we’re taking about a van. It sits on lower Eibach suspension, with 18-inch OZ Racing wheels wrapped in Michelin rubber. A new exhaust finishes it off, though I can’t say if it has done anything to spice up the diesel engine’s vocals.

Inside there’s leather trim, a chunky steering wheel, new dials and posh floor mats.

Ford themselves do a bodykit-clad Transit Custom Sport, but that’s a bit chavvy. Maybe it’s just me, but I think Van Sport’s interpretation is actually pretty cool. Even with the graphics. Alright, maybe not.

Oddly enough, Van Sport doesn’t quote any prices on the ‘price list’ section of its website. The van in the pictures started life as a top-spec Limited with all the options and a list price somewhere in the region of £33,000. And between parts and labour, I doubt the mods would leave much change from £10,000.

Even so, there’s something about it that makes me think, if I needed such a thing, I be happy to fork out over 40 grand for what is, after all, just a Transit with a bodykit.
