Meet the one-off, 450bhp V8 Toyota Hilux

I wonder how Toyota UK would celebrate selling a million examples of the Hilux pick-up? Perhaps a limited-run special edition with chrome ‘1,000,000’ badges and a few extra toys. Definately not like this, though.

‘This’ is how Toyota South Africa have celebrated the Hilux reaching the million mark there. The guys at Toyota SA Motorsport, who usually build championship-winning Hilux rally cars, lifted the mighty 5.0-litre V8 motor from a Lexus IS-F and dropped it into the Hilux’s engine bay. A Cosworth ECU, rally-spec inlet manifold and tubular exhaust – amongst much else – up output to 450bhp. Basically it’s the rally car, but with leather seats.

The engine is mated to the standard D-4D gearbox while the front and rear differentials have new ratios. Lowered ride height, adjustable dampers, quicker steering and big brakes sharpen up the driving experience – it’s clearly a proper sideways monkey.

Toyota SA claims this monster is “likely the most powerful Hilux ever built.” And you can’t buy it. Not to worry, though. It’s pretty easy to stuff a V8 into a Toyota Hilux – and you can pick up the engine from a Lexus LS400 for buttons – so there’s nothing to stop you creating your own version.
