Mercedes-AMG GT R spied testing at Nurburgring

They say the only certainties in life are death and taxes. But we can probably add ‘a hardcore version of the Mercedes-AMG GT’ to that list.

AMG boss Tobias Moers recently confirmed that there would be such a thing (as if it wasn’t obvious); this footage appears to show it in testing at the Nurburgring.

Despite the camouflage, the aerodynamically-enhanced, road-scraping front airdam and huge rear spoiler are clear to see, along with subtly flared wheelarches and side skirts. Good stuff, but it doesn’t look as wild as previous Black Series AMG cars.

And we can’t tell how much faster the GT R might be, as these laps look quite gentle. The undertray may scrape the Tarmac over the compression, and the brake lights may go into epilepsy-inducing overdrive, but the driver doesn’t seem to pushing to the absolute limit in the corners and short-shifts on the way out. That would suggest this is an early development mule that hasn’t been properly set-up yet.

Still it looks promising and, as Moers tells it, the finished product will be an absolute beast. “The new GT R will set a new benchmark in terms of driving dynamics,” he said. “It will be faster on a racetrack than even the SLS Black Series.”
