New car sales continue to rise

New car registrations rose last month, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), making July the 29th consecutive month of growth.

Some 172,907 new cars found homes in the UK during July, an increase of 6.6 per cent on the same month in 2013. Year-to-date sales stand at 1,460,172, a 10.1 per cent rise.

The SMMT assigns the growth to increased economic confidence and the availability of good finance deals. Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: “July saw the new car market extend its record period of growth to a 29th month, as confident consumers took advantage of an array of new products and attractive finance deals on the latest fuel-efficient new cars.”

The burgeoning new cars sales have led the SMMT to revise its full-year predictions to 2.45 million car sales, exceeding the most recent peak of just over 2.4 million in 2007. Last year 2,264,737 cars were sold.

July’s top four best sellers, the Ford Fiesta, Focus, Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Golf also top the year-to-date chart. The new generations of Nissan Qashqai and Mini both made the top ten in their first full month on sale.
