The Donkervoort D8 GTO-RS is what happens when you mix a Lotus Seven with Dutch crayshiness – you get a destroyer of worlds. Or racetracks, at least.
Though Donkervoort does still produce more faithful Seven replicas, only the basic layout is shared with the D8. It’s mostly made from carbonfibre for a start, and features a 2.5-litre, five-cylinder turbo engine lifted from the Audi TT RS.
This isn’t a new formula – the previous GTO was launched in 2013 – but Donkervoort has been through the car with a fine-toothed comb to come up with a comprehensive redesign.
The GTO-RS is slightly bigger and has better aero, though it’s still no looker. In fact, it looks like something that would kill a ‘red shirt’ on Star Trek.
There are changes under the skin, too, but at the moment Donkervoort is only highlighting a new engine management system. That suggests there’s even more power than the old car’s 380bhp on tap; in a car weighing about 700kg, that’s a gigantic amount.
As such, the 0-62mph should be in the 2.5secs range, with a top speed somewhere around 170mph. With weapons grade suspension and brakes underneath, lap records will surely tumble across the world.
More user-friendly GTO-R and GTO-S models will also be launched in due course. ‘User-friendly’ very much being a relative term, here.
