The rather handsome all-new Renault Megane will cost from £16,600 when it goes on sale in July.

That £16,600 buys a base-spec Expression+ model with the 1.2-litre, 128bhp TCe petrol engine. Cruise control, Bluetooth, DAB radio and all-round electric windows come as standard, while the engine delivers a 0-62mph time of 10.6secs.

But the best-seller is likely to be the £19,400 Dynamique Nav dCi 110. That gets lane departure warning, road sign recognition, keyless entry, climate cotrol, ‘Multisense’ driving modes, R-Link satnav/infotainment and an Arkamys stereo. The 1.5-litre diesel motor, meanwhile, produces leisurely performance but Co2 emissions of 96g/km, making it very light on road tax.

Further up the range, posh Signature Nav model adds LED headlights and leather seats, while the GT-Line Nav gets some sporty styling cues. For now, the 203bhp GT Nav is as sporty as the Megane range gets. Its 1.6-litre turbo engine and six-dual clutch gearbox dispatch the 0-62mph sprint in a launch control-assisted 7.1secs, while top speed is 145mph. The chassis was developed by the wizards at Renaultsport and features four-wheel-steering to improve agility and stability.

A full-fat Renaultsport version will be added to the line-up eventually, though Renault isn’t saying when. However, it has announced the Sport Tourer estate will be added later in 2016, with a Hybrid Assist diesel and 163bhp twin-turbo diesel engine following in 2017.

We reckon the new Megane looks very promising and stands a real chance of upsetting the Focus/Astra/Golf establishment.
