Vauxhall calls it a Sports Tourer, but to everyone else this is the new, British-built Vauxhall Astra estate, which will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week.
The load-lugging Astra uses a stretched version of the hatchback’s platform and is exactly the same size as the outgoing version – 4,702mm long, 1,871mm wide and 1,499mm tall. But better interior packaging frees up a bit more headroom and seats-down cargo capacity increases to 1,630 litres. That’s among the biggest boots in the class.
The rear seats split 40/20/40, while hands-free tailgate opening is available for the first time on a Vauxhall.
As per the hatchback, significant weight savings have been – up to 200kg depending on the model – thanks to General Motors’ new D2 platform.
The engine line-up follows that of the hatchback range, starting with a 99bhp, 1.4-litre petrol. There’s a new 148bhp 1.4-litre turbo petrol and a 198bhp version of 1.6-litre turbo petrol, but by far the vast majority of Astra estates will be sold with the 1.6-litre ‘Whisper’ diesel, available in several power outputs.
Full range details and pricing will be announced nearer launch.
