The Mercedes G-Wagen may have started life as a rugged and bare military vehicle, but it has become increasingly more lavish with each of the last 37 years. To the point that you can now buy one with a 600bhp twin-turbo V12 engine and an interior like a Maybach’s.
Throughout, however, a pared back version aimed at tradesmen and utility companies, named Professional, has also been available. At least, it was until recently when production was interrupted as the engine wasn’t compatible with Euro 6 emissions standards.
Happily, the G-Wagen Professional is back in G350d form. It uses the same 242bhp, 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel engine as its Chelsea-spec range mate, but is limited to a top speed of 100mph, rather than 120mph.
It’s just as capable off-road, too. In fact, slightly more so with a 10mm suspension lift to go with the ultra-rugged suspension and three locking differentials.
The interior is simplified with a simple stereo unit lifted from Mercedes’ vans, cloth seats, hose-down flooring with drain plugs and even wind-up rear windows.
Prices start at €79,968 (£61,823) and you can add to that significantly with the light guards, side steps, ladder, roof rack, towbar and wooden boot flooring the car pictured here wears.
That seems like a lot, considering you can get the arguably even more capable Land Rover Defender for around half that. But the Mercedes G350d Professional is just so damn cool, we’d probably be prepared to stump up for it.
