The Nissan Patrol is one of the biggest SUVs that any manufacturer makes. It’s big, tough, hugely capable off-road and can be specced as highly as any Range Rover. But it’s not, by any stretch of the imagination, sporty.

Still, that’s not stopped Nissan’s racing bods at Nismo from giving it the once over as the brand is launched in the Middle East, one of the Patrol’s biggest markets.

The Nissan Patrol Nismo gets deeper bumpers front and back; wide, integrated side steps; signature black and red detailing and 22in Raybrig wheels. Inside, seemingly the entire options catalogue is fitted as standard and there’s plenty of the obligatory ‘sporty’ trim.

Under the bonnet, the 5.6-litre V8 has been massaged a bit, bumping power output up an extra 28bhp to 428bhp. Even with 2.5 tonnes to drag round, that’s plenty for some spirited dune bashing.

Nissan Middle East boss, Samir Cherfan, said: “We could not have launched Nismo in the region without including our most iconic model, the Nissan Patrol, in the range of Nismo vehicles. Bringing the high performance brand to the Middle East and launching the Patrol Nismo as a world premiere model is proof of our commitment to making thrilling driving experiences accessible to all our customers.”

The Patrol Nismo is undoubtedly hugely excessive and completely unnecessary, but we have absolutely no doubt Nissan will have no trouble selling it. After all, we live in a world where AMG builds a twin-turbo V12 G-Wagen. Whatever, the fact it exists at all makes us quite happy.
