3D printing is on the verge of going mainstream. The process been used for years for rapid prototyping and is becoming increasingly common in manufacturing for small components.
3D printing at home is still quite rare. But as the machines get cheaper more people will start looking at them. If only they have something to print.
Ford is doing its bit to get the ball rolling with these very cool printable models. You simply buy a downloadable file from the Ford 3D Store for $5 and hit print. There’s a choice of the new Ford GT, F-150 Raptor, Focus RS, Focus ST, Fiesta ST and Shelby Mustang. You just need to finish them off with your own livery.
Head of licensing for Ford, Mark Bentley, said: “3D printing at home is a growing trend, and it makes sense for us to offer our customers a chance to make their own 3D Ford models. At Ford we’re using 3D printing every day to rapidly prototype parts, and now we want to share that fun with our fans.”
The processing of creating the models was handled by 3D modelling company TurboSquid, whose website contains thousands of downloads for printable models.
This may be a bit of fun, but it’s not hard to imagine we’re just around the corner from a future where it’s possible to download new parts for your car.
