11-time winner Stephane Petershansel led a Peugeot 1-2-3 on the fourth stage of the Dakar Rally, but was unable to topple teammate Sebastien Loeb from the overall lead.

Carlos Sainz was just 11 seconds slower through the 430km loop around Jujuy to take second. On a route that frequently switched between sandy and rocky surfaces, Loeb was on less familiar ground than the previous stages, but was still only 27 seconds off Peterhansel’s pace.

Loeb continues to hold the rally lead, ahead of Peterhansel who is starting to look threatening with less than five minutes to make up. Mini driver Nasser Al-Attiyah lies third after setting the fourth quickest time through the stage, while Leeroy Poulter leads the Toyota charge in fourth.

Local hero Emiliano Spataro is the best-placed driver not in a Peugeot, Mini or Toyota, holding 12th place in his Renault Duster. Top ten stage times are a possibility for the Argentinian, maybe even a top ten finish with a bit of luck.

Briton Harry Hunt is an impressive 17th, just under 47 minutes off the lead, after setting a string of top 25 stage times.

On the bikes, a convincing stage win by works Honda rider Paulo Goncalves vaulted him into the lead; pivateer Alexis Hernandez won the quad section, while Ignacio Casale continues to head the standings; and Dutch car transporter magnate Gerard de Rooy was quickest in his Iveco truck, with a time that would have put him 17th among the cars. Pieter Versluis unseats Hans Stacey from the lead.
