Renaultsports’s new one-make race car, the RS 01, has been spotted testing at Monza and it looks like a bit of a monster.

The spec-list reads likes a who’s who of race car construction. The chassis is an all-carbonfibre monocoque made by ultra-successful Italian firm Dallara.

Powering the car is a 3.8-litre, twin-turbo V6 engine pilfered from the Nissan GT-R. Nissan’s in-house tuners Nismo have given it a once-over, resulting in 493bhp and 443lb/ft. Which is plenty in a car that weighs barely 1100kg. A seven-speed sequential gearbox from Sadev sends power to the back wheels.

Serious, Le Mans car-esque aerodynamics stick the RS 01 to the road. Top speed will be on the far side of 186mph; 0-62mph will probably take quite a lot less than three seconds.

380mm carbon brakes gripped by six-piston calipers bring it to a stop, probably like its run into a brick wall.

The Renaultsport RS 01 will run in the Renaultsport Trophy series from next year, where it replaces the Megane Trophy.

The all-black car spotted at Monza looks positively evil, sounds amazing and appears to be going like stink. A field of 20-odd is going to be quite a spectacular sight.
