THINK of Barcelona and it’s Lionel Messi, beautiful city and, er, Manuel from Fawlty Towers.
Thankfully Seat have combined the former two for their latest creation.
The Ateca compact SUV is getting the sporty treatment with an FR edition revealed at the Barcelona Motor show next month.
This will not be the last part of Seat’s SUV story. Later this year, the Arona will arrive, followed in 2018 by a large SUV with a choice of five or seven seats.
The Ateca FR, all-new Ibiza and Leon Cupra 300 will be accompanied on the Seat stand by the Concept Car Seat 600 BMS, a Seat design project to commemorate the 60th anniversary of one of the brand’s most iconic models. A tribute to the past, the 600 BMS is based on the legendary Seat 600D with its rectractable top.
But, for now, the Ateca FR will be the next to hit showrooms – and it’s a stonker.
The FR features body coloured bumpers and wheel-arch trim, aluminium highlights and a set of 18-inch alloy wheels (19-inch options are available. It also gets meaner gloss black around the roof rails and window frames, while the grille receives the same treatment. LED front foglights also receive the FR touch.
Inside Seat continues the sporting drama, with new Alcantara clad sports seats, more aluminium trim on the door sills and pedals and a sporty perforated leather steering wheel – all unique to the FR. Full leather trim is optional.
This persona change doesn’t just impact aesthetics though, as the FR brings with it the option of dynamic chassis control (including adaptive dampers) and dynamic steering to aid its already impressive on-road handling.
From certain angles it oozes class and, dare I say it, a few glimpses of style that remind me of its Audi SUV stablemates.
It’s simply another quality product from Seat. Nothing Messi or Fawlty about this Barcelona-born star…
