THIS is the new Suzuki Swift with a whiff of Aston Martin. Seriously.
Suzuki have been beamed into prime time households with their £20million ad campaign on Saturday Night Takeaway.
They’ve also just launched a new marketing push around TV hit show Gogglebox this week for the Ignis model featuring comedian Katherine Ryan and Made in Chelsea star Mark Francis.
It’s a further sign that Suzuki are more fashionable than ever before.
Their new Swift certainly is.
It’s always been a massive seller, Suzuki managed to shift 5.4million of them in a dozen years.
Once upon a time you would just buy a Swift because it was cheap and cheerful. Looks and kudos weren’t top of your priorities -But that has definitely changed. This new model has a really alluring, sporty, strong look about it.
Maybe it’s the new link with the posh lot from Made In Chelsea, but the big front grille even has whiff of Aston Martin about it.
I’ve just had a drive of it in Wilmslow this week and it’s a stonking little runabout.
It will go on sale in a fortnight and prices will start from £10,995 going up to £15,499.
A total of five models will be available, giving customers the choice of three trim levels and 1-litre or 1.2-litre engines.
It’s chief rivals are the likes of the Seat Ibiza and Mazda 2 and will join it’s slightly bigger and more expensive stablemate Baleno in the Suzuki hatchback garage.
The three Swift trim levels are all good value and well equipped, and even the basic SZ3 comes with six airbags, air-conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity and a DAB radio.
The colours are fairly basic but effective. No nonsense names from Suzuki as well. None of this Hawaii Sunset Red or Pina Colado White. It’s just red, blue, white and grey. But I must admit, the grey looked the dog’s danglies.
Stepping up to SZ-T adds alloy wheels, front foglights and a rear-view camera, while the top SZ5 models have climate control, sat-nav, keyless entry and start, and rear electric windows.
All the stuff under the bonnet is fairly cheap to run. But it still drives very nippy and perky around the plush streets of Wilmslow which are more used to the Rangies and Cayennes of Manchester United players.
It’s new platform makes the Swift 20kg lighter than before, which has impoved efficiency. The new Swift is also 10mm shorter than the outgoing model, while its wheelbase is 20mm longer, creating more interior room. Luggage capacity is now 254 litres, or 54 litres more than the outgoing model.
Two engines are available, a 1.2-litre four-cylinder with 89bhp and a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder with 109bhp.
The larger engine averages a claimed 65.7mpg and emits 98g/km of CO2, but if you buy the smaller engine with Suzuki’s ‘mild hybrid system’, it has CO2 emissions of 97g/km – 7g/km less than the regular, non-hybrid version of the same engine.
At the most expensive end of the range, buyers can also specify an automatic gearbox – but only with the 1-litre engine and SZ5 trim – and four-wheel drive is available with the 1.2-litre engine.
The Swift makes up a whopping 40 per cent of Suzuki’s UK sales.
This is best Swift ever built with even that hint of Aston.
