Top picks from Amelia Island auctions

2014 Pagani Huayra - Pagani is our favourite hypercar maker. Other cars grab the headlines, but the Huayra is still one of the fastest (238mph), best handling cars in the world. And nothing can touch its bonkers styling and incredible attention to detail. This one is reputed to be the most expensive of the 100 cars built, with $260k of options, including a $20k luggage set. Sold for: $2,035,000 (RM Sotheby's)

Several of the big auctions houses pitch at Amelia Island in Florida during its prestigious concours event this week. They bring with them the usual vast array of vastly expensive machinery for the world’s vastly wealthy car enthusiasts to squabble over.

All eyes will be on Gooding & Co., whose sale includes no less than 17 cars from comedian Jerry Seinfeld’s world-class Porsche collection. But RM Sotheby’s and Bonhams have plenty that’s tickled out fancy, too.

Here, we focus on the catalogues of the latter two. Among our picks are a couple of short-lived manufacturers we hadn’t heard of before; a ’58 Chevrolet that looks like it could have belonged to a Mafia hitman; possibly the most expensive Pagani Huayra ever built and the world’s first petrol-electric hybrid, built 120 years ago.
