The Toyota GT86 is cool. Shooting Brakes are cool. So a Toyota GT86 Shooting Brake is by definition ultra-cool.
It was dreamt up by Toyota Australia’s product design department, just as an on-paper exercise. But when GT86 chief engineer Tetsuya Tada saw it, he was so impressed he had his team actually build it.
The only sheet metal changes are made from the B-pillar back, with new rear quarter panels and roof. A tailgate incorporating a roof spoiler and rear window has been fashioned, too, and lifts to reveal a boot that is apparently big enough for surfboards. Well, it was designed in Australia.
Mechanically the Shooting Brake is the same as any other GT86. So there’s a 197bhp, 2.0-litre flat-four engine at the front, a six-speed manual gearbox in the middle and rear-wheel-drive. It’s no static show pony either, having been put through its pases on Toyota’s test tracks.
Sadly – and despite the internet’s clamouring – it seems the GT86 Shooting Brake will remain a concept.
