The Volkswagen Amarok is the best double-cab pick-up truck you can currently buy. Now VW has launched the ultimate Amarok: the, err, Amarok Ultimate.
Limited to a run of 500, the Amarok Ultimate is the poshest version VW has yet produced. Standard kit includes bi-xenon headlights, 19-inch wheels, LED daytime running lights and lots of chrome.
Inside, there’s Alcantara upholstery, heated front seats, a reversing camera, Bluetooth and satnav. There’s only one engine choice, but it’s the top of the range, 178bhp 2.0 BiTDi twin-turbo diesel. Choose between a six-manual gearbox, or an eight-speed auto; both come with 4MOTION four-wheel-drive, do 0-62mph in 11 seconds-ish and top out around 110mph.
Since it is a truck, it needs to be able to carry stuff, and the Amarok is right on the money. The payload is 1,070kg, while it can tow 3,200kg (auto; 3,000kg manual).
The price before VAT (which you need to add if you’re a private buyer), is £29,555 for the manual and £30,970 for the auto. With combined fuel economy of over 30mpg, that makes it a bit of a bargain.
