Have you ever thought to yourself, “man, I wish I had a car that looked like a spaceship from a Loony Tunes cartoon?” It’s okay if you haven’t, because Maybach has on your behalf. And it’s built one. Because to hell with conforming with normality. Cars six metres in length and fitted with 24inch rims as standard are for WINNERS!
This is it. The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6. It’s already won our hearts by having the most underwhelming name. This car is utter motoring madness. It should be called the ‘Red Limocoupe of Dreams’, or something equally… mad.
It’s not powered by a thermonuclear jet engine with nitrous, so we’re deeply upset. You know, because anything less would be far too normal. Though having said that, the electric drive system with a 750hp and a range of over 200 miles isn’t to be sniffed at.
The madness isn’t restricted to the long, long body. It also spills into the Vision 6’s 2+2 innards. In there, you can find wrap-around seats. A dashboard straight from the pages of any science fiction novel and more space than the inside of a shipping container. To call it vast is an understatement. It’s “sensual, emotional design” apparently.
Hmm, Those seatbelts are going to cross your stomach diagonally. And where’s the passenger airbag? No, we’ll be nice, it’s a concept after all. And we love that fibre/transparent/I Robot-esque centre section. Simply wild.
As with any concept, the chance of this being made a reality is slim at best. However, it’s wonderful to see something utterly bonkers with absolutely no regard for real-world motoring. After all, you’re not going to get this around the multi-storey in town, are you? Plus, it seems to be getting the juices flowing at Mercedes HQ…
“Our glamorous coupé, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, represents the ultimate in contemporary luxury. It is hot and cool,” stays Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG. “With its intelligent appeal and reduced, technoid look, it perfectly embodies our design philosophy of sensual purity and our pursuit of aerodynamic efficiency.” Right’o Gorden, whatever you say.
These leaked (oh internet, you so naughty) images are a welcome sight. They also show us what’s going in the heads of Maybach’s pencil-wranglers. We just quietly hope that something similarly remarkable one day makes it to the roads.
And that’s were Mercedes shines. The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 might be a boastful, imposing and frankly implausible means of transport, but that doesn’t mean it’s not looking to real-world future applications. These concept vehicles take cues from trends in design, culture and mobility and make them the focal point. At the same time these ‘show cars’ are looking far into the future.
Could this really be a glimpse into the future of motoring? To a degree, we hope so.
