DIG out the flares, stick some Jimi Hendrix on the iPod, light up a suspicious cigarette and sit back and enjoy this big news.
The VW camper van is BACK!
Well actually it’s now called the Microbus and will come in a van version too, hopefully followed by a camper model too.
It will be the production version of the Volkswagen I.D. Buzz concept back in January and the German giants have now confirmed it will be built. Unfortunately it won’t arrive until 2022.
VW confirmed it will be electric too.
Dr Herbert Diess, VW board member, said: “The vehicle is an important pillar in Volkswagen’s electric drive initiative and carries the Microbus driving feeling into the future.”
VW reckons the car’s Level 3 autonomous driving tech gives it great commercial vehicle potential, as does its practicalities putting the batteries in the floor allows the front and rear axle to be spaced widely apart, handily boosting space for people and big loads.
The production Buzz will also look very close to the concept. VW added that “The production version will incorporate many design ideas from the concept car” plus “It will also feature variable seating, interactive connectivity and highly automated driving.”
It’s just one of 30 fully electric models that Volkswagen wants to have on sale by 2025.
You also get a free CND sticker for the back window. Apparently.
