UP, up and wahey!

Now this looks like fun.

Those German engine boffins at Volkswagen have decided to tweak up the performance of of their city car Up and give it a GTI version.

Finally the kings of the hot hatch are giving the Up the treatment afforded to the legendary Golf.

They’ve even nicked the designs so that means red-striped grilled and tartan seats.

Officially a concept, but with a production version confirmed, the Up GTI uses a 1-litre three-cylinder turbo engine with 113bhp.

That means hitting 62mph in a blink under nine seconds and all the way to 122mph top speed.

OK, that’s not red-hot hatch sort of figures but nonetheless it’s warm hatch enough for this pocket rocket to be a great little mover.

Add in the 15mm suspension drop and a bit more techno tinkering and it looks the bees knees.

VW are never cheap so it might yet be pricey, hopefully it’ll be a shade under £15k, but it could certainly be a big rival in status to the Suzuki Swift Sport and Renault Twingo Sport.

The Up GTI concept gets its big reveal at the Worthersee festival in Austria next week – with it hitting showrooms next year.

VW will get it right. The only way is Up.
