France used to be a Mecca for speed merchants, a country with a complete disregard for speed limits. A country where the police would actively encourage you to go faster. But no more.
These days, the rules of the road are rigourously enforced and it seems le flics have a new weapon in the war on speed. A weapon that is, ironically, balistically fast.
The weapon in question is Renaultsport RS 01, Renault’s top-grade one-make race car, powered by a 542bhp, twin-turbo V6 borrowed from the Nissan GT-R. Weighing just 1,100kg, it’s faster than a GT3 racer and more than capable of bringing down a sinister black motorbike that’s been clocked speeding. If this video is anything to go by.
Of course, what’s actually going on here is a rather brilliant bit of marketing, very slickly filmed and featuring every single model in Renault’s current range. And starring Jean Ragnotti, legendary Renault race and rally driver and all-round nutcase, most famous these days for doing 360s up the Goodwood hillclimb in a Group B Renault 5.
