Fiat is one of the biggest light commercial vehicle manufacturers in the world, but it’s always had a glaring, pick-up truck-size hole in its range. Not any more.
This the Fiat Fullback, just unveiled at the Dubai Motor Show, which enters the UK’s hotly contested medium-duty truck market in autumn 2016. Across the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, 675,000 pick-ups were sold in 2014.
Keen to gain a foothold in such a big market as quickly as possible, Fiat has shortcut the design and development process somewhat. For the Fullback is a Mitsubishi L200 with a Fiat face.
But that’s no bad thing. The recently-launched, fifth-generation L200 is one of the best pick-ups on the market. The Fullback comes with the same 2.4-litre, aluminium diesel engine as the L200, with 148bhp and 178bhp. There’s a choice of manual or automatic gearbox, both with permanent four-wheel-drive.
Payload remains unchanged at 1,045kg. Even the interior is the same, barring a Fiat badge on the steering wheel.
Full UK pricing and specs will be announced nearer launch. And yes, it is named after the rugby position.
