IS THIS the beginning of the end for the MPV?
Citroen have today confirmed that their C-Aircross Concept will become the C3 Aircross and go on sale later this year.
That could well spell the end of the huge Picasso success story for the French giants.
It’s another indication that the people carrier is on the way out as buyers want SUV macho appeal not MPV.
The Renault Scenic, Peugeot 3008 and Vauxhall Crossland X all prove that car firms are beefing up their traditional people movers and switching to a more desirable 4×4 personality.
It will follow a bigger C5 Aircross which Citroen will launch at the 2017 Shanghai Motor Show.
However, the C-Aircross is very much a hybrid of design from the new C3 hatchback and chunkier C4 Cactus.
The quirky Airbumps are on the doors while raised suspension and body cladding give it that much-desired SUV feel and look.
On the inside it’s also typical Citroen abstract with tons of personalisation as you’d expect and includes a 12-inch screen and head-up display.
But, all-in-all, it’s a funky, boxy little mover.
Is this the death of the people carrier?
Not quite yet but the macho SUV is truly back in fashion.
