Have you seen Ken Block’s Gymkhana videos on YouTube? Have you watched them and thought “I’d like to have a go at that?”
If you have, then Fueltopia Barrel Sprint (FBS) is probably the best place to start. It really couldn’t be any easier to compete. You simply turn up, pay the £35 entry fee, put a helmet on and get out there.
The course is just three barrels spaced out over 100 meters, you sprint between each one and do a three-sixty around it. Fastest time wins.
You don’t need a specialised car to take part. Your mum’s Corsa would do. If you want to do well, you have to start modifying. But if you just want to have some fun, use your daily driver. Though you might want to take a spare set of tyres.
Only Motors sent Tim BC along to a recent FBS meeting at Santa Pod to find out what it’s all about and meet one of the series’ rising stars, Jake Archer.
Jake started competing in FBS only a couple years ago, and now he races across Europe in the Gymkhana Grid series alongside Mr Block himself.
FBS is grassroots motorsport at its very best. Whether you want to become the next YouTube sensation or just have a fun day out, it’s well worth a go.
