Audi is patting itself on the back for all the success the mid-engined R8 has had in GT3 racing by launching a new special edition: the Audi R8 V10 plus selection 24h.
It’s hard to track down accurate figures but the R8 is one of – if not the – most successful car in the GT3 category. According to Audi it has racked up 323 wins since the R8 LMS was first launched in 2009. That track record includes wins in all the major 24 hour races at Spa, Zolder, Dubai and the Nurburgring, which the second-generation R8 LMS won at the first time of asking last year.
And let’s not forget Audi’s 13 wins from 17 attempts at the greatest race of them all, Le Mans – five of which were achieved with the R8 LMP.
What marks out the R8 selection 24h, then? Lots of gloss-finish CFRP trim, 20in wheels and a colour scheme inspired by Audi Sport’s colours are most easily picked out. It also features the brilliant virtual cockpit instrument display, variable-ratio dynamic steering, adaptive magnetic ride dampers and laser headlights.
Mechanically, the selection 24h is identical to the standard R8 V10 plus. Power comes from a 5.2-litre V10 producing 602bhp, enough for a 0-62mph time of 3.2secs and a top speed of 205mph. Audi claims that 50% of the road car’s components are shared with the race car, engine included. Though Balance of Performance rules means the R8 LMS actually produces less power.
Audi will build just 24 examples of R8 selection 24h, each identified by a serial number on the gloss carbon illuminated door sill. It will debut at this year’s Nurburgring 24 Hours; expect every one of them to be snapped by the end of the race, despite what is likely to be an enormous price tag.
